Rabbi Josh on Sabbatical
As part of the rhythm of their work, clergy across our Movement are expected to take periods of sabbatical.  At Alyth, we ask that our clergy take this as three months every three years, which ensures that they come to their work restored, while also reducing the impact on the life of the community.  Rabbi Josh’s sabbatical became due in November 2020 when he reached 12 years at Alyth.
This was delayed through 2020 and 2021 due to the demands of the pandemic.
​​​​​​​He is taking his sabbatical this year, in two tranches.  His second period of sabbatical began at the end of June and will continue to the end of August.   We wish him well for this period of rest and study.

Pardes Trip to the National Gallery - ALL WELCOME

A special trip to the National Gallery, hosted by Rev Dr Ayla Lepine, the Howard and Roberta Ahmanson Fellow in Art and Religion. Focusing on themes including love, peace, and faithfulness, our tour will feature paintings by Rembrandt, Claude Monet, and Bridget Riley.  We’ll explore connections between art history and scripture, including passages of text that explore angels, prophecy, and powerful images from the narratives of Moses and Ruth.

Normally we come together for conversation about a book we’ve spent the previous month reading. Launching this month, our new Monday afternoon social.  Join us for an afternoon of entertainment, discussion, homemade tea and great company!  
The Alyth Friendship Project brings people together for companionship and support.  It includes a weekly Monday social gathering, monthly Shabbat B’yachad lunch (starting Shabbat 2 July), the Alyth minibus scheme, and phone calls and support from the Alyth Befriending Group.

Please join us tomorrow, Friday 20 May, as we formally welcome Cantor Tamara and Rabbi Elliott into our community.  The evening will begin with a gathering on the synagogue forecourt (weather allowing) at 18:00, followed by a slightly extended Erev Shabbat service which will include a special ritual of induction.  

You do not need to let us know that you are coming, but we ask that you please be at Alyth by the start of the service at 18:30 if you possibly can.  The service will end slightly later than usual to allow us to celebrate properly together.

Our evening of study begins with dinner from 18:30, before we study together.  So that we know numbers for catering, please click the link below to let us know that you are coming.
Our theme for this Jubilee weekend will be Kings, Queens and Emperors - looking together at stories of rulers in our tradition, and how we, as Jews, interact with the government of our country.  
Our Erev Shavuot service will begin with Havdalah at 22:25, followed by Ma'ariv, before a final subversive study session to take us over midnight.

Join us in-person or live on Zoom for a step by step to make a yummy cheesecake with your family and friends. We'll explore why this connects to Shavuot and have time for everyone to show off their baking.
If you’re joining from home, you’ll need:
650g Cream cheese, 175g Digestive biscuits, 75g Butter,   175g Caster sugar, 100ml Double cream, 3 large eggs, 1 tsp Vanilla extract.  You will also need a 20cm tin (ideally springform), a handheld beater or electric mixer, a ziplock bag and a rolling pin, 2 wooden spoons and a rubber spatula.

The challenges of pandemic meant that we were unable to celebrate the two new members of the clergy team who joined us during 2020.  On Friday 20 May, we will celebrate Cantor Tamara and Rabbi Elliott with a service including a special ritual of induction.  
You are invited to join us on the forecourt from 18:00 for a surprise celebration, before our special Erev Shabbat service at 18:30.  The service will end slightly later than usual to allow us to celebrate properly together.
