LETTING US KNOW YOU ARE COMING TO ALYTH EVENTS

Over the next 18 months, during our building project, our use of space at Alyth is very challenging. The number of available rooms to accommodate our breadth of activities is now significantly reduced.

We are therefore asking that, for some events in our programme, members and friends please still let us know in advance that you are coming.
You will find links for these events in the weekly email.

Knowing in advance will allow us to allocate appropriate spaces for different activities. By knowing numbers, and whether people are joinng us in person or online, we can ensure that activities take place in a space that has an appropriate capacity, set up, and technology.
During the build period, we do not have a lift, so please also let us know if you are coming to an activity and cannot use the stairs by including this information in your registration or by emailing alythadmin@alyth.org.uk.

Following their introductory session on leyning on the Weekend Away, join Cantor Tamara to deepen your understanding of the history and variety of Torah chanting. We'll explore the history of leyning, the sound of the different cantillation systems, and their applications throughout the year.
You do not need to have come to the Weekend Away session. All are welcome.

Alyth Interfaith: Issues that divide us and how we find common ground: “Gender and Sexuality”
One of the highlights of the Alyth calendar is our annual Iftar - the opportunity to study with members of other faith traditions, to grapple with our differences, and to speak and eat together. we are delighted to welcome Revd. Dr Ayla Lepine and Amani Saeed. Ayla is the Ahmanson Fellow in Religion and Art at the National Gallery in London. Her work includes teaching the King’s College London and National Gallery collaborative MA in Christianity and the Arts, and building diverse new networks within arts organisations and faith communities. Amani Saeed is an international writer whose work brings the big issues to your kitchen table. She explores the crisis cultivated by living between sometimes (but not always) contradictory cultures, treading the line between masjid and mini skirt.

Judaism and the Big Ethical Questions: Inequality
Join Rabbi Elliott for this text based learning programme, in which we delve into Judaism and the Big Ethical Questions of our time. The reality is that humans live in a state of inequality, with some having more, others less. But is this how it should be? Should we be working to create a society in which all have and are treated the same, or is inequality part of the divine plan for the world? Together we will explore how our textual tradition approaches this big ethical question, hearing diverse voices from the bible, rabbinic literature, medieval thinkers and modern sources.

Some of the most important extra-biblical artefacts from the ancient near-East can be seen in the heart of London. In this annual ‘Essentials’ trip, open to all, we use the evidence found in the British Museum to piece together ancient Jewish history.

SECURITY AT ALYTH

As we enter a new year, we would like to remind all of our members about the importance of taking your role in our volunteer security.

One of the core values of any community is sharing responsibility for our collective wellbeing and safety. Like most synagogues, we express this by asking everyone who is able to contribute by standing on security for a short time, just once or twice each year. It is an unfortunate reality that this is a part of synagogue life, but it is necessary, and is an important contribution that each of us needs to make.

Volunteer security is supervised by our dedicated team of trained Team Leaders. Our TLs give a huge amount of time and energy to this aspect of our communal life, and they deserve all of our support.

Please look out for emails from 'rotacentral' and use this to sign up for your shift, making this important contribution to the welfare and safety of our community.

Our new interfaith programme runs throughout the year, with Alyth clergy teaching alongside other faith leaders and speakers to get to the root of difficult and divisive issues and to find the common ground in them. Each session will be followed by the opportunity to eat and speak together.

OFFICE OPENING OVER THE WINTER BREAK

The Alyth office is open on Friday 23 December as normal. It is closed on 25, 26 and 27 December and 1 and 2 January.
On 28, 29 December, the building will be closed to visitors, but the main office number will be answered between 10:00 and 16:00. Normal office opening applies on 30 December.
At all other times, please use the emergency number in case of emergencies.

Volunteering Opportunities: Alyth's Monday Club

For over 40 years, Alyth’s Monday Club has offered 12-16 members, of all ages, faiths, cultures and abilities, the chance to meet with their friends. It is an invaluable opportunity for friends to socialise in a safe environment.

There is a weekly programme of activities provided by professional facilitators. This includes art and crafts; drama; singing and music; storytelling; film night; exercise and music. Our guests meet in a safe and friendly environment, experience joy and are valued as an integral part of something special.

We would like to welcome more volunteers to ensure its continuing success.

There are two main ways in which you can volunteer:
- Assisting guests take part in the weekly club night; Mondays in term time (19:00-20:30)
- Driving our guests to and from Alyth from Edgware, Whetstone and Friern Barnet.
(A rota system for drivers and club volunteers means that you could commit to every week, once a fortnight, or once a month – whatever you can manage).

Members of our community will share Chanukah recipes, passing culinary traditions from generation to generation. Dinner, donuts and mulled wine will be provided. We especially invite young adults in our community to come to learn from generations that have come before them.

The return of an Alyth institution! After two years in which we could not gather to eat, laugh and quiz together, we are delighted to announce the return of the Alyth Supper Quiz on Sunday evening 5 February. Tickets and more information to follow... for now, save the date!

Volunteering Opportunities: The Night Shelter

After a 2 year Covid-enforced break, the Together in Barnet Night Shelter is returning to its previous format, moving between communities over the course of the week for 3 months. We will host the Shelter, together with Golders Green Parish Church, on Tuesday nights from 28 February to 18 April 2023, at the Church (opposite Golders Green bus station).

Volunteering opportunities include:
•   Welcoming our guests and being their hosts for the evening;
•   Cooking a course for their evening meal;
•   Sleeping overnight with our guests, ensuring their safety at night;
•   Providing a light breakfast and saying a warm goodbye;
•   Driving their sleeping bags and mats to where they will spend the next night;
•   Helping to coordinate the volunteers who generously give their time and support to the Night Shelter.

If you are interested in helping with any of these roles, please can you email the Coordinators at alythggnightshelter@gmail.com

Given the cost of living problems we will all be facing this winter and the huge pressures on social services and housing departments, this provision will be more vital than ever. Please consider giving a few hours of your time.

Alyth Build with Us - UPDATE

As you come into Alyth this weekend, and over the coming weeks, you will see that we are getting ready for the building work to begin.
Entry to the building is now through the left hand doors, where you will also find a temporary reception and cloakroom. The Leo Baeck wing of the shul is now hoarded off as we clear the space ready for the diggers to come in! There are a few more contractual details to finalise and as soon as they are done, we are ready to go!

The best way to keep updated on the works as they progress over the coming 18 months will be to follow the special 'Alyth Build with Us' Instagram account which will be updated with pictures. You can follow us here

Over the next month we will also be relaunching our Build with Us fundraising programme. If you are able to help make the new Alyth building possible, please contact us by emailing Rabbi Josh at josh@alyth.org.uk, or email buildwithus@alyth.org.uk.

Issues that divide us and how we find common ground (19:30- 21:00)
One of the highlights of the Alyth calendar is our annual Iftar - the opportunity to study with members of other faith traditions, to grapple with our differences, and to speak and eat together. This doesn’t only need to happen once a year!
Our new interfaith programme will run throughout the year, with Alyth clergy teaching alongside other faith leaders and speakers to get to the root of difficult and divisive issues and to find the common ground in them. Session themes will include: Land, Salvation/Mission, Gender, Sexuality, Start and End of Life. Each session will be followed by the opportunity to eat and speak together.

The Fifth Alyth Weekend Away will be taking place next month, from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 December.

We have a few rooms available for members to stay over the weekend, as well as the option of coming for a day on Shabbat for those who wish.

What is the idea of the Weekend?
The Weekend Away is the perfect opportunity to deepen your relationship with the Alyth community: to meet new people, to get to know other Alyth members, the staff team and clergy; to feel ownership of your synagogue, your community and your Judaism.

Where is it taking place?
This year’s Weekend Away is at the beautiful High Leigh Conference Centre in Hoddesdon, about an hour from Alyth by car and accessible by train to Broxbourne.

Who is it for?
The Weekend Away is for the whole Alyth community. There is something for everyone over the course of the weekend. Please note that children under 16 must come with a parent or carer.

What will we do?
The programme will speak to our whole selves, with the opportunity to explore new activities, learn new skills and to pray and learn with community. As well as services, meals and learning, there will be a variety of outdoor and indoor activities to choose from, or just read the newspaper with a cup of coffee looking out over 40 acres of beautiful land.

What is there for children?
The Youth and Education team and madrichim (our Alyth trained youth leaders) will be on hand through the weekend running a programme for children during the day and in the evenings. For those with younger children, there are family rooms, with aspects of the programme for young families, and we can also arrange baby listening in the evening.

Join us for the long awaited fifth Alyth Weekend Away.
Taking place at the beautiful High Leigh Conference Centre in Hoddesdon, about an hour from Alyth by car. We have exclusive use of the site, with a full programme for adults and children, with plenty of time just to be together.

We recognise that household budgets may be stretched this winter. Please do not allow finances to be a reason not to attend the Weekend Away. The Clergy Jewish Participation Fund is a confidential fund, the purpose of which is to support all Alyth members in having the richest possible Alyth life.

As Alyth approaches its 90th anniversary, a masterclass-in-concert showcasing the diversity of musical traditions that has defined our communal prayer life over the last 90 years and will do so into the future. Mini Bus Drivers

Would you like to help enable members to access our Shabbat services and other events?
We are looking for more volunteers to join our existing Team and there are different times of the week where we need people to be picked up.

Our next training is to be held on Wednesday, 9th November, 09:00 to 12:30 including a test drive in the bus.

Storage Space
As we near the start of our building project we are reaching out to ask if members can help with practical matters.
This week we are asking about STORAGE space.
We are clearing the building and have a number of items that need to be stored off-site during the building work.

Community Shacharit Service (10:15)
A special service for the whole community.
With an area for children so that our youngest members can be with us before their own special Torah service, which will take place after the Hakafot and dancing. In our Torah service, we will finish and re-start the cycle of reading Torah with our Chatan Torah, Mark Harris, and our Kallat B'reshit, Harriet Radley.
A short Yizkor service will take place after the Torah Service.

We are delighted that 31 young people in Year 8 will be going on our annual trip to Budapest from 24-27 October. Their journey begins with an information meeting, a special mi sheberach in our Friday night service, and supper after the service together.
