Erev Shabbat
27 September

Our weekly Erev Shabbat activities start with our two "Den" services in their usual time slots as listed in our "Regular Activities" section.

Elul Half Hour
(17:45-18:15) Join us for these brief times of reflection, study and contemplation before each of Alyth’s Shabbat services during Elul. This year eight different teachers will use a question from the Bible as a starting point for reflection on our own lives. 
Today,“How shall we return?” (Malachi 3:7) with Student Rabbi Nicola Feuchtwang.

Erev Shabbat service
(18:30-19:30) Our regular Friday night service led by Rabbi Josh and Rabbi Hannah.

 

Shabbat Morning
28 September

Elul Half Hour
(09:45-10:15) Today, “Where are you?”(Genesis 3:9). With Rabbi Daniel Lichman.

Shabbat Morning Service
(10:30-12:15) Led by Rabbi Josh with the Alyth choir. Includes the Bar Mitzvah of Jonah Brink Dalton. The sermon will be given by Rabbi Daniel Lichman, Student Chaplain for Reform Judaism.

Bayit Cham Lunch
(13:00-15:00) Join us for a Shabbat lunch with fantastic food, company and discussion. No charge (although donations are welcome). To book and/or to arrange transport call Saskia on 020 8457 8784.

Erev Rosh Hashanah
Sunday 29 September

For all Rosh Hashanah services we will be using a draft of the new Machzor or a service siddur produced by Alyth. These will be provided for use at the services.

Erev Rosh Hashanah Sing with Us
(17:15) The opportunity to sing together with Rabbis Josh and Hannah in preparation for the beginning of the New Year.

Erev Rosh Hashanah Service
(18:00) Join Rabbis Josh and Hannah for a service bringing the very best of our Friday nights to the start of the Yamim Noraim.  This music-filled beginning to the year, with guitar accompaniment, will include both High Holy Days and familiar melodies. Please note the service time and that it is at Alyth.

First Day Rosh Hashanah
Monday 30 September

First Day Rosh Hashanah Services
(From 10:15) We are holding our usual variety of services and sessions at both the Sternberg Centre and at Alyth.

Tashlich
(16:30) Join Rabbi Hannah and Chloe at the Dollis Brook at the bottom of Windsor Road, Finchley N3 for our Tashlich service. If there is any rain on Rosh Hashanah, we will be hosting Taschlich at Alyth. Please check the website at 15:00 on Rosh Hashanah with the location.

15Join us at Alyth for a choice of three services: a Choral Service (10:15),  a Band Service  (10:15), the Rosh Hashanah Den (11:00), with activities for school years 3-6 from 11:00.

 

Wednesday 2 October

Jewish Mindfulness Mediation
(20:00) The Alyth Meditation Room offers a space for contemplation through the 10 Days.  Led by expert facilitators and rabbis drawing from the Jewish meditative tradition.  You are welcome to attend every session, or to simply drop in when you wish, and no pre-booking is necessary. This session led by Mika Hadar-Borthwick. There are also sessions on 3, 4 and 7 October.

Thursday 3 October

Ten Days Zone
(16:00-17:00) Join Chloe and the Kef Zone team for our 10 Days Zones to mark the transition between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.  With arts, songs, games and food – there will be something for everyone!

Friday 4 October

Baby Den
(10:30-11:30) Wake up with Shoshi the Sheep to sing songs, be with friends and bop to a Shabbat beat. Our musical Baby Den, this week with Rabbi Hannah and Chloe, is designed to help your little one develop creativity, co-ordination and concentration.

Shabbat Den
(16:15-16:45) For pre-schoolers and their families with Rabbi Hannah and Chloe. Join us for songs, stories and to meet new friends at Alyth’s 
Shabbat Den.

Jewish Mindfulness Meditation
(17:15-18:15) Join Rabbi Danny Newman and the JMM team for a stress free, restful hour of contemplation, movement and learning to set you up for Shabbat. Together we will experience an hour of menuchah, Shabbat rest.

Erev Shabbat service
(18:30-19:30) Our regular Friday night service led by Rabbis Josh and Hannah.  The Dvar Torah will be given by Rabbi Danny Newman, founder of HaMakom.

Saturday 5 October

Shabbat Shuvah Monthly Midrash in the Morning: Moses
(09:15-10:15) Join Rabbi Hannah for this monthly session studying the midrashic back story of biblical characters over coffee and Danish. This month: Moses - what can he teach us from his death-bed?

Shabbat Morning Service
(10:30-12:15) Led by Rabbi Josh, with guitar. Includes the Bar Mitzvah of Raphael Goodman. The sermon will be given by Rabbi Dr Deborah Kahn-Harris, Principal of the Leo Baeck College.

Sensory Shabbat
(11:00-12:00) 
Our Shabbat experience designed to stimulate your babies’ senses in the first years of their life.
Join Rabbi Hannah and Chloe in this service where you and your baby can touch, see, smell, hear and taste your way through the service. Suitable for babies from birth to 2 years. Be mindful that this is a quiet experience.

Sunday 6 October

Israeli Dance Class
(10:30-11:30) Do you love dancing during the hakkafot on Simchat Torah, but always feel you’re doing a mayim when you should be doing a Yemenite step? Join Rabbi Hannah to learn the moves we will be dancing together during Simchat Torah.

Bulb Planting at La Deliverance
(11:15-12:05) Join Mike Freer, our local MP, for the planting of 1500 crocus bulbs on the green by La Deliverance, between Charter Way and Regents Park Road, Finchley in memory of the 1.5 million children’s lives lost in the Holocaust. Rabbi Josh and Alyth members will help to plant from 11:15-12:05. Please contact saskia@alyth.org.uk to let us know that you are coming.

Remembrance Service at Cheshunt
(11:00) One of the customs that has survived the centuries is that of visiting the cemetery between the beginning of the month of Elul and Yom Kippur.  We know that sometimes it's difficult to find the right words and thoughts on such occasions and so we invite you to join Lynette, Head of Community Care and Life Cycle, for a Remembrance Service at Cheshunt Cemetery. There will also be time to visit graves. Please let saskia@alyth.org.uk know if you are coming and if you require transport.

Cultivating a Heart of Forgiveness with Rabbi Dr James Jacobson-Maisels
(20:00-21:30) JMM and HaMakom are delighted to present this special evening with Rabbi Dr James Jacobson-Maisels, the founder and spiritual director of Or HaLev: A Center for Jewish Spirituality and Meditation and a senior faculty member of HaMakom.  Through study of Kabbalistic texts, sharing, discussion and meditation practice, we will explore the nature of forgiveness and discover ways to help the heart open in forgiveness to others and ourselves.

Nursery World Manager of the Year Award

Good luck to our Kindergarten Head Teacher Tor Alter who has been nominated as a finalist for the Nursery World ‘Manager of the Year’ Award, one of six finalists in the whole UK. The award ceremony is this Saturday night. Good luck, Tor!
