TISHA B'AV 5780
How can we sing a song of the Eternal One on alien soil?’: Art and Music on the Book of Lamentations (13:00-14:00)
A special Pardes for Tisha B’Av with Rabbi Dr Deborah Kahn-Harris.
Since antiquity, the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem has been marked by the reading of the Book of Lamentations. Yet the often deeply disturbing and explicit imagery can be distressing read and the poetic form of the book can make it less accessible for some readers. But we can find other ways into to studying Lamentations. In this session we will look at an array of art work inspired by Lamentations and listen to the words of the text set to a variety of musical styles, from the 16th – the 21st centuries. This visual and aural journey will help us both explore the book of Lamentations and commemorate Tisha B’Av.

Regular Pardes sessions will continue throughout the summer.
