The Health Gap: The Marmot Review 10 years on with Professor Sir Michael Marmot
Michael Marmot is Professor of Epidemiology at University College London, Director of the UCL Institute of Health Equity, and Past President of the British Medical Association. In 2008, he was asked by the British Government to conduct a Strategic Review of Health Inequalities in England, the results of which were which published in the report 'Fair Society, Healthy Lives' in 2010. In February 2020, he released an update to the report, the ‘Marmot Review 10 Years On’. He is author of ‘The Health Gap: the challenge of an unequal world’ (2015) and ‘Status Syndrome: how your place on the social gradient directly affects your health’ (2004). PRAY WITH US Erev Yom Hashoah Ceremony Monday 20 April, 18:30 On the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, Reform Communities in the UK will come together to mark Erev Yom Hashoah in a special Tekkes (ceremony) with Clergy and lay leaders. LEARN WITH US Yom Hashoah Talk Tuesday 21 April, 11:00-12:00 Rabbi Colin and Lynette are joined by Moshe Teller from Shalvata, a specialist team offering therapeutic and practical support including: 1–1 counselling sessions, support groups for bereaved, spouses of survivors and survivors who talk in schools. Moshe will talk about his work with survivors of the Holocaust and the second generation. We will end by reciting El Male Rachamim and Kaddish. Contemporary Hasidic Yiddish in the UK and beyond with Dr Lily Kahn Lily Kahn is Reader in Hebrew and Jewish Languages in the Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies, UCL, specialising in Hebrew and Yiddish philology. She teaches Biblical Hebrew, Rabbinic Hebrew, Ugaritic, and Yiddish. She is also interested in Yiddish, the history of Hebrew, comparative Semitic linguistics, Jewish languages, translation studies, endangered language revitalization, and the development of Hebrew and Yiddish pedagogical materials. She is the author of 'Colloquial Yiddish' (2012), a step-by-step approach to Yiddish designed for the twenty-first-century English-speaker, and 'The Routledge Introductory Course in Biblical Hebrew' (2015). Lily will share findings from her current research - a collaborative Arts and Humanities Research council project on contemporary Hasidic Yiddish worldwide.
